Munster Technological University (MTU) is a large public university with six campuses in the Irish counties of Cork and County Kerry. It is one of Ireland's newest universities, officially opening in January 2021.
MTU was created by joining together two older schools: the Cork Institute of Technology and the Institute of Technology, Tralee. Today, it is a big community with over 18,000 students and 2,000 staff members. It was the second university of its kind, called a technological university, to open in Ireland.

How MTU Was Created
The idea for a new university in the Munster region was discussed for many years. The plan was to combine two existing colleges to create a large, multi-campus university. This would give students in Cork and Kerry more opportunities for higher education.
A formal request to create the university was made in 2019. In May 2020, the head of the Irish government, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, announced that the new university was approved. Munster Technological University officially began operating on January 1, 2021.
Important Events at MTU
In October 2021, MTU started a campaign to provide free period products for students and staff. This made it the first university in Ireland to offer such a service. The campaign also held events to teach people about menstruation and health.
In February 2023, the university faced a serious computer problem called a ransomware attack. This cyberattack disrupted classes at the Cork campuses for a short time while experts worked to fix the issue.
Campuses and Facilities
Munster Technological University is spread across six different locations. Some are in the busy city of Cork, while others are in County Kerry. Each campus has special facilities for different subjects.
Cork City Campuses
MTU Bishopstown Campus
The main campus in Cork is in a suburb called Bishopstown. It's a large area with modern buildings, a library, computer labs, and art studios. For sports, it has a running track, tennis courts, and playing fields. There is also a swimming pool nearby. The campus is known for its cool architecture.
MTU Crawford College of Art & Design
The university's art college, the Crawford College of Art and Design, has several buildings in Cork's city center. Students here study subjects like fine art, digital media, and art education.
MTU Cork School of Music
The Cork School of Music is located in a special, modern building on Union Quay in the city. It opened in 2007 and is a hub for music students.
National Maritime College of Ireland
The National Maritime College of Ireland is part of MTU. It is located in Ringaskiddy, a town near Cork city. This college focuses on subjects related to the sea, like sailing and shipping.
Kerry Campuses
