MTU's Story: How it Began
Planning a New University
People started planning for a new university in this area a long time ago. In 2012, there was an idea for three colleges to join. This included Waterford IT.
Later, the two colleges in Cork and Tralee decided to try and merge. They wanted to create a second university in their region. This would be the third university in the province of Munster. They officially asked to become a university in February 2019.
Challenges and Approval
In May 2019, some teachers at the colleges did not agree with the merger. Experts from other countries visited the campuses to help.
In May 2020, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced good news. He said the new university was officially approved. It would open in January 2021.
Important Events at MTU
In October 2021, MTU started a special project. It was called the "Code Red Period Dignity campaign." This project gives free period products to students and staff. MTU was the first university in Ireland to do this. The campaign also held events to teach people about menstruation. They wanted to remove old ideas and wrong information.
In February 2023, MTU had a big computer problem. It was a cyber attack that stopped all classes. This happened on the Cork campuses for a while.
