History of Murphy
The town of Murphy is named after an Irishman called John James Murphy. He was born in 1822 in a place called Haysland, near Kilrane, in County Wexford, Ireland.
John James Murphy came from a Catholic farming family. He was not married and decided to move to Argentina to find better opportunities. He sailed to Buenos Aires and then went to the pampas, which are large grasslands, to look for farm work.
He started by digging ditches to separate sheep farms. Later, he became a sheep farmer himself, renting land. Eventually, he bought his own land in the Salto area. He kept buying more land, becoming very wealthy by the time he died in 1909.
In 1911, the railway system in Argentina was growing. The government bought some of Murphy's land near Rosario from his family. A train station was built there and named Estación Murphy. The town that grew around this station was officially named Murphy in 1966.
