Murrays Crossroads was once a small, unofficial community in Schley County, Georgia, United States. It was also known by names like Murray, Murrays Cross Roads, and Poindexter. This place was located where two important roads met: U.S. Route 19 and Georgia State Route 240. It was just north of Ellaville, which is the main town of Schley County.
The land at Murrays Crossroads is about 440 feet (134 meters) above sea level. In the late 1800s, it was a busy and successful country settlement. It even had its own post office by the year 1884.
History of Murrays Crossroads
Murrays Crossroads was a lively place in the late 19th century. It was known as a "prosperous country settlement." This means it was a successful small community in the countryside. People lived and worked there, and it had enough activity to need its own post office.
In 1893, a famous politician named Thomas E. Watson gave a speech there. This shows that Murrays Crossroads was important enough to host such events. By 1959, some people even called it a "town." However, by 2021, it was mostly remembered as a place that used to be a rural community. It is no longer an active community today.
Location and Area
Murrays Crossroads was found at a key intersection. This was where U.S. Route 19 crossed paths with Georgia State Route 240. These roads helped connect the community to other places. The location was north of Ellaville. Ellaville is the county seat of Schley County. A county seat is the main town where the local government offices are located.
The community is also part of the Americus Micropolitan Statistical Area. This is a way to group nearby towns and areas that are connected economically.
