History and Culture of Muscoda

Early History and Native American Villages

Long ago, in 1840, an explorer named William Pidgeon visited the Muscoda area. He said it was once a very old and large Native American village. He saw many ancient mounds on the sandy ground. These mounds were shaped like different things, such as forts, giant people, or animals. Some looked like eagles, otters, snakes, alligators, deer, elk, and buffalo. This shows that many people lived in these areas a very long time ago.

English Prairie and the Village Name

Muscoda was once known as English Prairie. This name came from two English fur traders, Abraham Lansing and Garrit Roseboom. They set up a trading post after the French and Indian War. In 1763, Lansing and his son were sadly killed by their French helpers. The story of this event made the name English Prairie famous until 1840.

The name Muscoda (pronounced "MUS-co-day") might come from the Ojibwa (Chippewa) word mashkode. This word means "prairie." It could also be from a famous poem called Hiawatha by Longfellow. The popular meaning of Muscoda is "Prairie of Flowers."

Morel Mushroom Festival

Since 1982, Muscoda has called itself "Wisconsin's Morel Capital." A morel is a type of edible mushroom. Every year, the village hosts the "Morel Mushroom Festival." This fun event happens on the weekend after Mother's Day. The festival includes many exciting things. There are carnival rides and tractor pulls. You can also find tournaments, merchant stands, and food booths.
