A Peak with a Past

Mustang Peak has an interesting history, especially when it comes to horses! The name "Mustang" itself suggests a connection to wild horses.

The Horse Trails of Old

Long ago, this area was an important route for moving horses. Imagine large groups of horses being guided through the mountains. These horses were sometimes kept in nearby areas known as Paradise Flat or Mustang Flat.

From these flats, the horses would be led up what is now called Long Ridge Road. This road connected to a very old trail known as La Vereda del Monte. Today, parts of this historic trail are known as County Line Road, which runs along the north side of Mustang Peak.

Joaquin Murrieta's Connection

Some of the horses moved through this area were linked to a famous historical figure named Joaquin Murrieta. His group used these mountain paths to guide horses south, often towards the town of Sonora. This movement of horses was a significant part of the region's past.
