Mutton Brook is a small stream located in the London Borough of Barnet. It flows between areas like East Finchley and Hendon. This stream is a "tributary" of the River Brent. A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. The River Brent then flows into the famous River Thames.

Where Does Mutton Brook Flow?

Mutton Brook starts in a place called Cherry Tree Wood. At first, it flows underground. Then, it comes out near Belvedere Court on Lyttleton Road.

The brook then travels under Lyttleton Road. It flows along the south side of this road and Falloden Way. You can see it as it passes through parks like Lyttleton Playing Fields, Fletchers Gardens, and Northway Gardens.

Near Brookland Rise, the brook briefly crosses to the north side of Falloden Way. It then crosses back to Brookside Walk. It goes under Finchley Road at Henlys Corner. After that, it passes under the North Circular Road. Finally, Mutton Brook meets another stream called Dollis Brook near Bridge Lane. When these two streams join, they form the River Brent.

Nature Along the Brook

For most of its journey, Mutton Brook flows through local parks. This makes it a nice green space in the city. The brook is often lined with concrete or wood channels.

Even though the water quality can sometimes be poor, the areas around the brook are important for nature. Many trees grow along the downstream parts of the brook. These include oak, ash, and willow trees. These trees create a good home for different kinds of birds. You might even spot grey wagtails looking for food near the water's edge.

Because of its importance for wildlife, Mutton Brook is recognized as a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation. This means it's a special place where nature is protected.

Historical Boundary

For many years, until 1965, Mutton Brook was an important boundary. It marked the southern edge of the Municipal Borough of Finchley. This was a local government area before many London boroughs were combined.

Walking Trails

If you enjoy walking, two popular trails follow Mutton Brook. These are the Capital Ring and the Dollis Valley Greenwalk. These paths allow people to explore the natural beauty along the stream.
