Plot Summary
Duncan Fletcher (Will Friedle) is a regular teenager. He needs a date for his school's spring dance because of a bet with his friends. At the mall, he meets Hallie (Elisabeth Harnois). Hallie is secretly the daughter of the President, George Richmond (Dabney Coleman). She snuck away from her Secret Service guards during a campaign stop.
Duncan doesn't know who Hallie is. He asks her to his school dance, and she says yes. She gives him her address.
At the White House, Hallie tells her dad about the date. President Richmond doesn't want her to go because of a fundraiser that night. But after talking with his wife, First Lady Carol Richmond (Mimi Kuzyk), he agrees.
That night, Duncan's family is having a party for his dad's company. Duncan asks his dad, Charles Fletcher (Jay Thomas), to borrow the company car, a red BMW. His dad says no. But Duncan takes the car anyway to pick up Hallie. He is surprised when he arrives at the White House.
Inside, Hallie introduces Duncan to her father. Duncan learns that he and Hallie must follow strict rules. Secret Service agents will be with them all the time. Hallie tells her dad they are only going to dinner and a movie.
At the movie theater, Hallie and Duncan pretend to kiss on the floor. This helps them sneak away from the Secret Service. When the agents realize they are gone, they call their boss. The boss then tells the President. The President orders Duncan's family to be brought to the fundraiser.
Hallie wants to go shopping for new clothes. They go to a store called F/X. Hallie tries on many outfits. Duncan buys a cool holographic ring from a gumball machine. Hallie comes out in a pink mini-dress. She then picks an expensive leather coat for Duncan.
Before they go to the dance, Hallie wants to visit a new nightclub called Club Alien. Meanwhile, at the Fletcher's party, Duncan's dad realizes the company car is missing. He tries to hide it from his boss, Herb. The Secret Service arrives and tells them Duncan ran off with the President's daughter. They order the Fletchers to meet the President. Herb overhears that Duncan took the company car and is upset with Charles.
Hallie drives Duncan's car to Club Alien. At a red light, they meet some rude guys in a truck. The guys flirt with Hallie, which annoys her. Hallie tells them to back off, thinking Duncan will protect her. One of the guys threatens Duncan. Duncan tells Hallie to drive through the red light, and she accidentally runs over the guy's foot.
As the night goes on, Duncan and Hallie face many challenges. Both their fathers search for them across the city. The President and Charles even get arrested for a traffic violation. A police officer doesn't recognize the President. Later, their families get them released. Duncan and Hallie both return home safely. They are sad because they realize they really like each other after their first kiss.
They never made it to the dance. But Duncan is happy with how the date turned out. Duncan's dad grounds him at first. But later, he is no longer grounded. He starts spending more time with his son. Then he learns Duncan used his credit card!
Duncan loses the bet with his friends because Hallie didn't come to the dance. He pays them. President Richmond comes to Duncan's school to thank him. He lets Duncan keep seeing Hallie. The President and Duncan's family become friends. Duncan's reputation at school gets better because he's dating the President's daughter. Duncan's dad gets a promotion at work. His boss gets to meet the President and play golf with him. Hallie and Duncan start a real relationship. They happily go on a second date with the President's approval. Secret Service SUVs and Marine One go with them.
