The Myall Lakes are a group of beautiful fresh water lakes in New South Wales, Australia. They are located on the Mid North Coast, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of Sydney. These special lakes are protected under the Ramsar Convention, which means they are important wetlands for nature.
Exploring Myall Lakes
The Myall Lakes system is made up of three main lakes. These are Myall Lake, Boolambayte Lake, and The Broadwater.
When the lakes are full, Myall Lake covers about 5,800 hectares. Boolambayte Lake is around 1,100 hectares. The Broadwater covers about 2,400 hectares.
Lake Connections and Rivers
The lakes are partly connected to each other. You can even travel between them in a small boat. The Myall River flows into The Broadwater from the west.
The Myall River also flows out of The Broadwater. It then winds its way southwest. Finally, it empties into Port Stephens. This happens between the towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. As the river gets closer to the ocean, its water becomes saltier.
Surrounding National Park
Most of the Myall Lakes are surrounded by the Myall Lakes National Park. This park helps protect the natural beauty and wildlife of the area. The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service manages the park.
They also run a car ferry across the lake at Bombah Point. The land between the lakes and the sea is mostly untouched coastal woodlands. There are also long, quiet beaches. The small village of Bungwahl is found on the northern shore of Myall Lake. You can also find several small islands within the lakes.
