From 1993 to 2002, before becoming a politician, Dobkin worked as a businessman. He was the director of several companies during this time.
Serving in Parliament (2002–2006)
In 2002, Mykhailo Dobkin was elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine. This means he became a member of the Ukrainian parliament. During his time in parliament, he changed political parties a few times. He started with "For United Ukraine!" and later joined the Party of Regions. He stayed with the Party of Regions until the parliament's term ended in 2006.
Mayor of Kharkiv (2006–2010)
From March 2006 to March 2010, Dobkin served as the Mayor of Kharkiv. As mayor, he was in charge of the city's government. He worked closely with Hennadiy Kernes, who later became mayor himself.
Governor of Kharkiv Oblast (2010–2014)
In March 2010, the President Viktor Yanukovych chose Dobkin to be the Governor of Kharkiv Oblast. A governor is like the head of a region or state.
During a time of big changes in Ukraine called Euromaidan in 2014, Dobkin supported President Yanukovych. He suggested that Ukraine's capital city should move from Kyiv to Kharkiv. He also thought Ukraine should have a federal government structure. This means different regions would have more power.
Political Changes in 2014
After the Revolution of Dignity, Dobkin was a key figure among officials in Eastern Ukraine. These officials questioned the new government's actions. They said local leaders would take charge of their regions until things settled down.
Dobkin later announced he wanted to run for president in the 2014 Ukrainian presidential election. He was worried about how the new government treated people who spoke Russian in Ukraine. He resigned as governor on February 26, 2014, to focus on his presidential campaign.
On March 10, 2014, Dobkin was arrested. However, his case was later closed in August 2014.
Presidential Campaign (2014)
On March 25, 2014, Dobkin officially applied to run for president. His political party, the Party of Regions, supported his choice.
During his campaign, Dobkin talked about several ideas. He wanted Ukraine to have more regional power and a federal system. He also suggested Ukraine should join the Eurasian Customs Union. This is an economic group of countries. He also wanted to improve relations with Russia.
In the presidential election, Dobkin received 3.03% of all the votes. He did best in eastern Ukraine. For example, he got 26.25% of the votes in Kharkiv Oblast.
Back in Parliament
In the 2014 Ukrainian parliamentary election, Dobkin was elected to the Verkhovna Rada again. This time, he was part of the Opposition Bloc party.
In 2017, parliament removed his special protection as a member. He was then arrested because of accusations related to land deals in Kharkiv. He was later released on bail.
Dobkin left the Opposition Bloc party in October 2017. In February 2018, he started his own party called the Party of Christian Socialists. He ran for parliament again in 2019 but was not elected.
Kharkiv Mayoral Elections (2020 and 2021)
