Naima Mora is an American fashion model. She became famous after winning the fourth season of the TV show America's Next Top Model.

Her Early Life

Naima Mora was born on March 1, 1984, in Detroit, Michigan. Her parents were both talented musicians. Her mother, Theresa Mora, was a jazz singer. Her father, Francisco Mora Catlett, was a jazz drummer. Naima's grandparents were also famous artists. Her grandfather, Francisco Mora, was a painter. Her grandmother, Elizabeth Catlett, was a sculptor and painter.

Elizabeth Catlett even made a sculpture of Naima! It was a black marble bust called Naima. Her grandmother said she was inspired by Naima's energetic personality. She also liked the unique shape of Naima's hair.

Naima's father is part Mexican and part African-American. Her mother is Irish and African-American. Naima was named after a famous John Coltrane song called "Naima". She has five sisters, including her identical twin, Nia. Nia is a photographer. Naima's older sister, Ife Sanchez Mora, is a singer and songwriter.

Naima grew up in Detroit. She went to Bates Academy for middle school. In 2002, she graduated from Cass Technical High School. Naima was a serious ballet student. She studied at Detroit's Ballet Renaissance. She also attended a summer program with the American Ballet Theatre.

Naima practices Nichiren Buddhism. She is an active member of the Soka Gakkai International. In 2013, she gave a TEDx Talk. In her talk, she shared stories about her childhood. She also spoke about how Buddhism influenced her career.

Winning America's Next Top Model

Naima Mora was one of the top fourteen contestants on America's Next Top Model, Cycle 4. This was a reality TV show on the UPN network. During the competition, she was very successful. She was voted Covergirl of the Week ten times in a row. She also won four challenges. The judges chose her first two times.

Naima was in the bottom two only once. She survived that round, and another contestant, Brittany Brower, went home. In the final judging, the judges chose Naima Mora as the winner. She won over the runner-up, Kahlen Rondot.

Naima's Career

After winning America's Next Top Model, Naima's career took off. On September 3, 2012, she released an iBook called Naima Mora's Model Behavior. This book was published by Possibility Publishing & Entertainment.

Naima has appeared on television. She was a guest on The Tyra Banks Show. She also appeared on the second season premiere of Veronica Mars. You might have seen her in a CoverGirl commercial with Yoanna House.

In 2005, Naima and Ann Markley were Trophy Girls. Ann was from America's Next Top Model, Cycle 3. They were at the Primetime Emmy Awards. Naima also served as a judge at the Miss Teen USA Pageant in 2005.

Naima has done a lot of print modeling. She has been in CoverGirl, ELLE Magazine, Fuego Magazine, and Us Weekly Magazine. She also appeared in Radar, In Touch, Star, and Teen People. She modeled for Split Clothing and other brands.

She has walked in many runway shows. These include Christopher Deane Spring 2006 Collection and Gharani Strok Fall 2005. She also walked for Carlos Miele Fashion Show and Walmart. Naima was part of ELLEgirl Presents Dare To Be You Spring 2006. She participated in Fashion Comedy Style 2005, which was a charity event. She also walked in New York Fashion Week 2007.

Naima has modeled with her sisters. She modeled with her sister Ife for iTunes. She also modeled with her twin, Nia, for Camille McDonald's lingerie line, Lingerwear. Camille was from America's Next Top Model, Cycle 2.

In 2006, Naima filmed a role in an independent movie. She also appeared in a music video for TV on the Radio's song "Wolf Like Me." The next year, she was on the cover of U&U magazine and Uzuri magazine. She was photographed by Romer Pedrome and Derek Blanks. In 2008, she had a cover and editorial in Vicious magazine. She signed with 301 Model Management in Miami and Basic Model Management in New York City. She walked in the Project Runway Finale for designer Joe Farris. As of 2021, Mora continued modeling. She was signed with EMG Models.

Naima was also a singer. She was the vocalist for a band called Chewing Pics. Later, she sang with the band Galaxy of Tar.

Naima also wrote a play with director Marishka S. Phillips. The play is called The Amazing Adventures of a Woman in Need. It is about three characters who represent parts of Naima's own thoughts. In August 2021, MPTP Productions announced an Off-Broadway performance of the play. Naima performed as the narrator in October 2021.
