How the Company Started
Heraclio Fournier González was the youngest son in his family. His family already had a factory. Heraclio started working with his brother Braulio Fournier there. Together, they created a new kind of playing card.
Later, Heraclio decided to start his own business. In 1870, he moved to Vitoria and opened a factory. It was called "Naipes Heraclio Fournier." At first, they focused on making playing cards. But they also printed stamps and books.
New Designs and Awards
In 1875, Heraclio found new ways to print cards. He also created new designs. Two years later, he worked with an art teacher named Emilio Soubrier. He also worked with a painter named Diaz de Olano. They designed the first brand of his famous Spanish playing cards.
In 1880, the company moved to a bigger building. Heraclio often traveled to France to make his manufacturing even better. In 1889, he won an award at a big exhibition in Paris. One year later, he changed his playing cards again. The new deck had 12 different colors. After these changes, he won many more awards in cities like Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona.
Passing It On
Heraclio Fournier passed away in 1916. He did not have any sons to take over the company. So, his grandson, Félix Alfaro Fournier, became the new owner. Félix loved playing cards and started collecting them.
In 1970, Félix bought a large collection of cards from another company. After that, he opened a special place called the "Museo Fournier de Naipes." This is a museum all about playing cards!
Modern Times
By 1948, Naipes Heraclio Fournier was the best playing card maker in Spain. In 1986, a company from the United States bought Naipes Heraclio Fournier. This company was called United States Playing Card Company.
Today, Fournier sells about 16 million packs of cards every year. They sell cards to many casinos around the world. This makes them one of the most important playing card makers globally.
In 1993, the company grew even more in the international market. Because of this growth, they moved to a very large warehouse. This new place had enough space to meet the growing demand for their cards. The company also earned a special certificate for the quality of its production process.
