Nam Định is a province in northern Vietnam. It is located in the southern part of the Red River Delta. Nam Định borders Ninh Bình province to the southwest. It also borders Hà Nam province to the northwest. To the northeast is Thái Bình province. The Gulf of Tonkin is to the southeast.
As of 2018, Nam Định is the 52nd largest province by area. It is the 12th most populated province in Vietnam. Nam Định has been very important throughout Vietnam's history. This is because of its location on the Red River Delta. Many famous Vietnamese people were born here. One of the most notable is Trần Hưng Đạo. It is also believed that the famous Vietnamese dish Phở originated here.

Nam Định has a rich history. It has been an important area for a long time.
How Nam Định is Organized
Nam Định province is divided into 10 main areas. These are called district-level sub-divisions.

These areas are further divided. There are 15 small towns. There are also 194 communes and 20 wards.
Geography and Landscape
Nam Định province has three main types of land.
Low-lying Delta Region
This area includes Vụ Bản district, Ý Yên district, Nam Trực district, Trực Ninh district, and Xuân Trường district. It is a flat area. Farming is very common here. There are also many factories for textiles and other goods.
Lowland Coastal Region
This region includes Giao Thủy, Hải Hậu, and Nghĩa Hưng districts. Nam Định has a coastline that is 72 kilometers (45 miles) long. This area is good for raising animals and fishing. The Xuân Thủy National Nature Reserve is also found here.
Central Region
The city of Nam Định is located in this central area. This region focuses on making textiles and clothes. It also has industries for machines and processing. Many traditional crafts are found here. There are also growing service industries. Nam Định is a key area for trade in Vietnam. It connects to the south through the Red River Delta.
Nam Định has four major river mouths. These are Ba Lạt, Đáy, Lạch Giang, and Hà Lạn.
Climate in Nam Định
Nam Định has a humid subtropical climate. This is typical for the northern delta region. The average temperature is about 23 to 24°C (73 to 75°F) each year.
Temperature and Rainfall
The coldest months are December and January. Temperatures average 16 to 17°C (61 to 63°F). July is the hottest month. Temperatures can go above 29°C (84°F). The province gets about 1,750 to 1,800 millimeters (69 to 71 inches) of rain each year.
There are two main seasons for rain. The rainy season is from May to October. The drier season is from November to February. Nam Định gets about 1,650 to 1,700 hours of sunlight yearly. The air is usually quite humid, around 80 to 85 percent.
Tropical Storms
Because it is near the Gulf of Tonkin, Nam Định often experiences tropical storms. These storms and monsoons happen about four to six times a year.
Economy of Nam Định
Nam Định's economy includes farming, industry, and services. In 2005, farming, forestry, and fishing made up 41% of the economy. Industry and construction were 21.5%. Services made up 38%.
Industrial Zones
Nam Định has several special areas for factories and businesses. These are called industrial zones.
- Hòa Xá Industrial Zone: This zone is in Nam Định city. It covers about 808 acres (3.27 square kilometers). It has many investment projects.
- Mỹ Trung Industrial Park: This park is still being built. It is located near National Highway 10. It covers about 370 acres (1.5 square kilometers).
- Thành An Industrial Park: This park is in the colonial part of Nam Định. It is also near National Highway 10. It connects to the port of Hải Thịnh.
- Bảo Minh Industrial Park: This zone is in Vụ Bản District. It is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Nam Định city. It covers about 494 acres (2 square kilometers).
- Hồng Tiến Industrial Park: This park is 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Nam Định. It is next to National Highway 10. It is also near the North-South National railway.
- Ninh Cơ Industrial Park: This park is along the Ninh Cơ River. It is about 500 hectares (1,235 acres) in size. It includes seaports and ship building. It also offers tourism services along the river.
Culture and Society
Education in Nam Định
Nam Định province is well known for its strong education system. It has many excellent schools. Lê Hồng Phong High School is one of the best high schools in all of Vietnam.
Other top schools include Giao Thủy A High School, Trần Hưng Đạo High School, Nguyễn Khuyến High School, and Hải Hậu A. In 2003, these schools were among Vietnam's top 200. By 2009, Nam Định had five schools in Vietnam's top 100.

Religions in Nam Định
Several religions are practiced in Nam Định province.
- Đạo Mẫu: This is a local folk religion. It started in the province in the 16th century.
- Buddhism: Many people follow Buddhism. The Zen school was especially important during the Trần dynasty.
- Catholicism: The Catholic Church is also present. It is part of the Hanoi Archdiocese and the Bùi-chu Diocese.
