Nam Gon (Korean: 남곤, 南袞; 1471 – 10 March 1527) was an important person in Korean history. He was a politician, poet, and a smart scholar during the Joseon Dynasty. He held very high positions in the government, even becoming the Prime Minister. Nam Gon was also known by his nicknames Jijeong, Jijokdang, and Jijok. His courtesy name was Sahwa. He was part of a group of scholars called the Sarim faction.
Nam Gon's Family Life
Nam Gon came from a respected family. His father was Nam Chi-shin. His mother was Lady Ha of the Jinju Ha clan. He also had an older brother named Nam Po.
Nam Gon was married to Lady Yi of the Yeonan Yi clan. Together, they had three daughters. He also had a fourth daughter with another woman. Nam Gon had a son named Nam Seung-sa. He also had a concubine named Lady Joun, who was a gisaeng (a female entertainer).
Nam Gon's Career and Studies
Nam Gon was a Neo-Confucian scholar. This means he studied a special way of thinking and living based on the teachings of Confucius. He was part of the Youngnam school of thought. He also taught others, including a famous scholar named Kim Jong-jik.
Nam Gon held powerful jobs in the Joseon government. He was the Vice Prime Minister until 1520. Then, he became the Prime Minister from 1523 to 1527. This was one of the highest positions in the country.
He was a political rival of another famous scholar, Jo Gwang-jo. Even though they had different ideas, both were very influential. Jo Gwang-jo studied under Nam Gon's friend, Kim Kwaeng-pil.
Nam Gon's Writings
Nam Gon was also a talented writer. He wrote several books and collections of his thoughts. These works help us understand his ideas and the time he lived in.
