Nand Kumar Patel (born November 8, 1953 – died May 25, 2013) was an important politician from the Indian National Congress party. He was from the state of Chhattisgarh in India. He was chosen by the people to be a MLA for the Kharsia area five times in a row. This means he represented his area in the state government from 1990 until 2013.

He also served as a cabinet minister in the governments of both Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. This means he was in charge of important departments in the state. Sadly, he was kidnapped and killed during an attack in 2013.

Early Life and Political Journey

Nand Kumar Patel was born on November 8, 1953. His hometown was Nandeli, which is in the Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh. He became involved in politics and joined the Indian National Congress party.

Serving the People as MLA

Nand Kumar Patel was very popular in his home area of Kharsia. He was elected as an MLA for the Kharsia Assembly Constituency five times. These elections happened in 1990, 1993, 1998, 2003, and 2008. This shows that people trusted him to represent them for a long time.

Important Roles in Government

Mr. Patel held several important positions in the state government. He was a cabinet minister in both Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. When Chhattisgarh became a new state in 2000, he became its very first Home Minister. This is a very important job, as the Home Minister is in charge of law and order. He served as Home Minister from November 2000 to December 2003.

He also became the President of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee in April 2011. This meant he was the top leader of the Congress party in Chhattisgarh.

Tragic Attack and Legacy

On May 25, 2013, Nand Kumar Patel and other Congress leaders were traveling in a convoy. This group was attacked by a rebel group known as Naxalites. At first, it was thought that Mr. Patel and his son, Dinesh, were kidnapped.

The Attack and Its Aftermath

The next day, their bodies were found in the Jiram valley in the Bastar district. The Naxalites later said they were responsible for the attack. They claimed it was a punishment for actions taken by a group called Salwa Judum, which was a force against the Naxalites.

Remembering Nand Kumar Patel

To honor his memory and contributions, a state university was named after him. The Shaheed Nandkumar Patel Vishwavidyalaya is located in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. It was officially opened in January 2020. This university includes many government and private colleges.
