Giovanni "Nanni" Moretti (born 19 August 1953) is a famous Italian film director, producer, writer, and actor. He is known for making movies that often star himself.

Nanni Moretti's films have won many important awards. These include the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival for his movie The Son's Room. He also won a Silver Bear at the 1986 Berlin Film Festival for The Mass is Ended. Another big win was the Silver Lion at the 1981 Venice Film Festival for Sweet Dreams.

He has also won the David di Donatello Award for Best Film three times. These wins were for Caro diario (1994), The Son's Room (2001), and Il caimano (2006). Since his film Caro diario, all his movies have been shown at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2012, he was even the head of the main jury at Cannes.

Nanni Moretti's Life and Film Journey

Nanni Moretti was born in Bruneck, Italy. His parents were both teachers from Rome. His father, Luigi Moretti, taught Greek at a university.

As a child, Nanni found two things he loved: movies and water polo. After finishing school, he decided to become a filmmaker. In 1973, he made his first two short films: Pâté de bourgeois and The Defeat.

In 1976, Moretti released his first full-length movie, Io sono un autarchico (which means I Am Self-Sufficient). Two years later, in 1978, he wrote, directed, and starred in Ecce Bombo. This movie is about a student facing problems with his friends. It was shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

His film Sogni d'oro (Sweet Dreams) won the Silver Lion at the 38th Venice International Film Festival. Later, La messa è finita won a special award at the 36th Berlin International Film Festival.

Moretti is perhaps most famous for his films Caro diario (Dear Diary, 1993) and The Son's Room (2001). The Son's Room won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.

Nanni Moretti often uses the same actors in his films for smaller roles. Some notable Italian actors he has worked with many times include Silvio Orlando and Laura Morante.

Moretti used to play waterpolo in a high division of the Italian championship. This experience later inspired his film Palombella Rossa. Outside of Europe, his films are not as widely known. But in Italy, he is famous for making funny and unique movies, where he usually plays the main character. His most recent acting role was in the film Mia Madre (My Mother, 2015).

Nanni Moretti is also known for his left-wing political views. In 2002, he helped organize protests against the government of Silvio Berlusconi. His 2006 film Il caimano is partly about Berlusconi's political issues. Moretti even played Berlusconi in one part of the movie. His film Aprile also talks about Italy's political situation and Moretti's opinions. His 2011 film We Have a Pope was also shown at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

Moretti lives in Rome, where he was born. He owns a small movie theater called Nuovo Sacher. He named it after his favorite cake, the Sachertorte. A short film he made, Opening Day of Close-Up (1996), shows him at his theater trying to get people to watch a film by director Abbas Kiarostami.

Nanni Moretti is not a religious person. He once said, "I'm not a believer and I'm sorry."

His 2015 film Mia Madre was chosen to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
