The Patagonian toad, also known as the Eden Harbour toad, is a special type of toad. Its scientific name is Nannophryne variegata. This small amphibian belongs to the toad family, called Bufonidae.

You can find the Patagonian toad in the southern parts of Argentina and Chile. It lives in places like Neuquén in Argentina and stretches all the way down to Tierra del Fuego. This makes it one of the most southern amphibians in the entire world! It shares this amazing record with another frog called Batrachyla antartandica.

Where the Patagonian Toad Lives

The Patagonian toad loves cool, damp places. Its natural habitats include forests that are not too hot, wet bogs, and a type of cold, open land called Magellanic tundra.

Finding Their Home

You might spot these toads in marshes or hiding under logs. They often live in Nothofagus forests, which are common in this part of the world. They also live in tundra areas surrounded by shorter Nothofagus trees.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

When it's time to have babies, the Patagonian toad looks for shallow, temporary pools of water or swamps. This is where they lay their eggs and where their young begin to grow. Even though their homes can sometimes be changed by humans, these toads are quite common in their areas.
