The Blanford's frog (its scientific name is Nanorana blanfordii) is a type of frog. It belongs to the Dicroglossidae family. You can find this frog in parts of northeastern India, southern Tibet (China), and eastern Nepal. It might also live in nearby western Bhutan. The name blanfordii was given to honor William Thomas Blandford. He was a British scientist who studied rocks and animals.
What Does This Frog Look Like?
Blanford's frogs are medium-sized. They are a bit smaller compared to their closest frog relatives. Adult male frogs are about 39 to 47 millimeters (1.5 to 1.9 inches) long. Female frogs are a bit larger, measuring 39 to 56 millimeters (1.5 to 2.2 inches). This measurement is taken from their snout (nose) to their vent (bottom).
Their snout is rounded. The tympanum, which is like their eardrum, is not very easy to see. Their fingers and toes have special discs on the tips. Their toes are also webbed, which helps them swim.
The frog's back, called the dorsum, is grey-brown. It has some black marks with white edges. You might also see two black triangle shapes between their eyes. The underside of their body is white.
The young frogs, called tadpoles, can grow up to 52 millimeters (2 inches) long.
Where Do Blanford's Frogs Live?
Blanford's frogs live in small streams. They also live in the grassy areas and temperate forests around these streams. You can find them at high places, from 2,600 to 3,400 meters (about 8,500 to 11,000 feet) above sea level.
These frogs lay their eggs in the water, usually under stones in streams. This is where their babies start their lives.
How Are These Frogs Doing?
We don't know much about how many Blanford's frogs there are in most places. They seem to be rare in China. We also don't know what might be threatening them.
However, these frogs are protected in some areas. For example, they live in the Yadong National Nature Reserve in Tibet. This helps keep their homes safe.
