Napanoch is a small community called a hamlet in Ulster County, New York, United States. It's located where two main roads, Route 209 and Route 55, meet. In 2020, about 1,131 people lived there. Napanoch is part of a special area known as the Shawangunk Ridge National Scenic Byway and the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.

History of Napanoch
The name "Napanoch" comes from the Munsee language, spoken by the Lenape people who lived here long ago. It is believed to mean "land overflowed by water." This name was used in the very first official document for the area.
The old Route 209 and Main Street follow a historic path called the Minisink Trail. This was a trail used by the Lenape people to travel between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. In the early 1700s, a man named Louis Bevier bought this land for his two sons, Jean and Abram Bevier.
Historic Buildings in Napanoch
Two important buildings in Napanoch are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized for their historical importance. These are the Hoornbeek Store Complex and the Ontario and Western Railroad Passenger Station.
Another large building, the Eastern Correctional Facility, was built in 1900. It was first used as a place to help young people who had broken the law. Since 1973, it has been a high-security prison for men.
