Aboriginal Tribes of Riverena
Country of the Nari-Nari

The Nari-Nari are an Indigenous Australian group. They live in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. Historians believe the Nari-Nari formed near Balranald. This area is on the lower Murrumbidgee River. They likely came from different groups joining together. These groups included the Wiradjuri and the Watiwati. The Nari-Nari share a border with the Muthi Muthi tribe to their west.

Nari-Nari Language and Culture

The Nari-Nari people have their own language. It is called Nari Nari. This language is a dialect of Wemba Wemba. A dialect is a different way of speaking a language.

As of 2020, there is a special project. This project aims to bring the Nari Nari language back to life. The word nari in their language means "no" in English.

Traditional Nari-Nari Lands

The Nari-Nari people traditionally lived on a large area of land. This land covered about 14,245 square kilometers (5,500 square miles). Their western border was on the southern bank of the Lachlan River. This stretched from Booligal to just above Balranald.

From Balranald, their land went east along the Murrumbidgee River to Hay. To the south, it reached about Booroorban. The Wemba-Wemba tribe's land was to their south. The Barababaraba people lived to their southeast. To the northwest were the Jitajita people.

Protecting Nari-Nari Country Today

Today, the Nari-Nari people are represented by the Nari-Nari Tribal Council. This council was formed in the year 2000. The council works to protect their traditional lands.

They have bought two large farms, called stations, west of Hay. They did this with help from the Indigenous Land Corporation. Buying these lands helps to protect important cultural sites for the Nari-Nari people.
