Muthi Muthi Language
The Muthi Muthi people spoke a language called Madhi Madhi. It is part of the Kulinic language family. According to expert Barry Blake, Madhi Madhi is the most well-known of the Mathi languages.
What makes Madhi Madhi special is that it does not have one-syllable nouns. This is different from many languages spoken by their neighbours.
Traditional Lands
The traditional lands of the Muthi Muthi people covered about 5,700 square kilometres (2,200 square miles). These lands included the Murrumbidgee River near Balranald. Their western border was close to Lake Benanee. Their northern lands were west of Carrawatha.
Today, several towns are within their traditional territory. These include Booligal, Oxley, Maude, Homebush, Clare, Kyalite, Tooleybuc, Koraleigh, and Euston.
Neighbouring Groups
The Muthi Muthi people shared borders with several other Aboriginal groups. These included the Parrintyi to the north and the YitaYita to the northeast. The Nari-Nari were to the east, and the Wati Wati were to the south. The Dadi Dadi were to the southwest, and the Kureinji were to the west.
Archaeological studies have found burial mounds in this area. These mounds help confirm the traditional boundaries of the Muthi Muthi people.
