Euston is a small town located on the Murray River in south-western New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Balranald Shire. Right across the river, in Victoria, is its twin town, Robinvale.
In 2021, Euston had a population of 822 people. For a long time, Euston was the main town in this area. This was before the irrigation systems were built in Robinvale. Euston got its first post office in 1852. It closed for a short time but reopened in 1856.
History of Euston
For thousands of years, Aboriginal groups lived around Euston. The Kureinji people were the main group here. You can still find many signs of their lives. These include scar trees, old campfires, stone tools, and burial sites.
In 1830, an explorer named Charles Sturt was the first European to travel through this region. When Europeans first arrived, they started to settle the land.
In 1876, people described Euston as a place where sheep and cattle crossed the river. It had a customs office, a post office, and a telegraph office. There were also a few hotels and about a dozen small houses.
Today, Euston and Robinvale have many people from Calabria, a region in southern Italy.
Fun and Sports in Euston
Euston has a place called the Euston Sports and Recreation Club. There is also the Euston Pub. The town used to have its own Australian rules football team. They played in the Millewa Football League. But the team had to join with Robinvale's team. This was because there were not enough players in Euston.
Euston is a great spot to enjoy the Murray River. It is known for fishing, especially for the Murray cod. You can also find other native fish species here. However, the European carp is now a threat to these native fish.
Euston's Climate
Euston has a cold semi-arid climate. This means it is quite dry. It is a little cooler than nearby Mildura. Most of the rain falls during the cooler months of the year.
Scientists have been recording rainfall in Euston since 1877. They started recording temperatures in 1907. The hottest temperature ever recorded was 48.7 degrees Celsius. This happened on January 13, 1939.
