Discovering Robinvale's Past
The land around Robinvale has a long history. It is the traditional home of at least five Aboriginal groups. These include the Latji Latji and Dadi Dadi people. Places like Bumbang Island have many important cultural sites and heritage items.
The town got its name to remember Lieutenant George Robin Cuttle. He was a brave soldier who died in air combat over France in 1918. The Post Office first opened in 1924 as Bumbang. It was renamed Robinvale in August of that same year.
Railways and Bridges
Robinvale became connected to the rest of Victoria by railway in 1924. This happened when the line from Manangatang was completed. In the 1920s, work started on extending the railway line. This extension was planned to cross the Murray River into New South Wales.
However, this railway extension was never finished. Work on it officially stopped in 1943. A special bridge was built across the river as part of this project. It was a combined rail and road bridge. This bridge was used until 2006. That year, a new road bridge was opened. The part of the old bridge that used to lift up is now in a nearby park. It is a permanent display to remember the town's history.
The Murray River Lock
Lock 15 on the Murray River is just downstream from Robinvale. This lock helps to create a pool of water for irrigation. It also makes sure that the river near Robinvale always has enough water. This is great for water activities like water skiing. The weir and lock were finished in 1937. It was the last lock built on the Murray River.
