Penarie is a small place located in the Riverina district of New South Wales, Australia. It is about 32 kilometers (20 miles) north of a town called Balranald. Penarie is part of the Balranald Shire local government area.
This little settlement sits at an important crossroads. One road connects Balranald to Ivanhoe. Another road branches off from Penarie and leads to Oxley. In the past, Penarie was known by a different name: Homebush.
History of Penarie
Penarie is located on the traditional lands of the Muthi Muthi Aboriginal people. They are the original owners and caretakers of this land.
Early European Settlement
In 1877, a man named Michael Dowdican bought some land at the road junction where Penarie is today. He decided to build a hotel there.
The hotel was named the Homebush Hotel and it opened its doors in 1878. It was a place where travelers could stop and rest.
Hotel Owners
Michael Dowdican was the owner and manager of the Homebush Hotel for many years. He held the license to run the hotel until 1896.
After him, William H. S. Wilkinson took over as the publican (the person who runs a pub or hotel). He managed the hotel from 1897 until at least 1900.
William Henry Smith Wilkinson passed away in 1905. Later, Mrs. Catherine Prendergast also managed the Homebush Hotel for several years. She was the widow of Patrick Prendergast, who was an important early settler in the nearby village of Maude.
