Narrikup's Story: How it Began

The name Narrikup comes from an Aboriginal word. It is thought to mean "place of abundance," which sounds like a great place to live!

A man named Thomas Wilson visited this area way back in 1829. He traveled from Albany and camped near a stream where the town is now.

The town is located along the Great Southern Railway line. This railway was finished in the Narrikup area in 1889. At first, the train stop was called Hay River.

A special area for the town was set aside in 1901. Then, in 1905, 20 building plots were measured out. The town of Narrikup was officially recognized in 1907.
