Narungga (also spelled Narangga) is an Aboriginal language from Australia. It was spoken by the Narungga people. They lived on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.
When Europeans settled in Australia, many Aboriginal languages, including Narungga, almost disappeared. This is called language loss. However, people worked to record the Narungga language. In the 1980s, the Narungga community started to bring their language back.
What is Narungga Language?
Narungga is part of a group of languages called Yura languages. This group also includes languages like Nukunu, Kaurna, and Ngadjuri. All these languages belong to a larger family called Pama–Nyungan. This is one of the biggest language families in Australia.
Bringing the Language Back
Thanks to these efforts, the Narungga language is now being taught again. Narungga culture is also being shared. You can find these teachings in schools around the Yorke Peninsula. This includes schools in Moonta, Maitland, and Point Pearce. This shows how important it is to keep Aboriginal languages alive.
