She was born around 1825 and passed away in March 1893 in Stand Off, Alberta. Natawista was known for her skills as an interpreter and a diplomat. Her father, Two Suns, was a respected leader of the Kainai people. Natawista's name has been translated to mean "Medicine Snake Woman" or "Holy Snake."

They first married at Fort Union in 1840. Natawista was 15 years old at the time, and Alexander was 30. Later, in 1858, they had another marriage ceremony in Peoria, Illinois. Together, Natawista and Alexander had five children.
