Nathaniel Uring's Adventures
In 1722, King George I of Great Britain gave a special document to John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu. This document gave the Duke control over the islands of St. Lucia and St. Vincent. These islands are located in the West Indies. The King also made the Duke the main leader of these islands.
A New Plan for the Islands
The Duke of Montagu chose Nathaniel Uring to be his deputy-governor. This meant Uring would help manage the islands. The Duke sent Uring on a big trip with seven ships. These ships carried many settlers and their families. The goal was to start new British settlements on the islands.
Challenges in St. Lucia
When Uring arrived, the British navy ships nearby did not help him. Soon, French soldiers from the island of Martinique landed in St. Lucia. They came to stop the British from settling there. Uring had to make a deal with the French. He agreed that his group would leave St. Lucia within seven days.
Trouble in St. Vincent
After leaving St. Lucia, Uring tried to settle in St. Vincent. But the people already living on the island did not want them there. They fought against the new settlers. This attempt also failed. It is said that the Duke of Montagu lost a lot of money, about 40,000 pounds, on this whole project.
