NationStates is a fun online game where you get to create and manage your very own nation. It's played right in your web browser and also has a big online community. Max Barry created this game on November 13, 2002. He first made it to help advertise his book, Jennifer Government.

Playing NationStates is free! However, if you want to remove ads, you can choose to donate money. You can also buy special features for "telegrams," which are like direct messages between players.

How to Play NationStates

It's free to sign up for NationStates. When you join, you'll need to pick a name for your nation. You also choose a national motto, a national animal, and a currency. After playing for a while, you can even change your government type, religion, or who your leader is. Players can also upload or choose a flag for their nation.

Chatting with Other Players

The game has a special place called a forum where players can chat. You can talk about many things, like politics or recent events. There are different sections for different kinds of talks:

  • General: This is for discussing and debating anything you like.
  • Forum 7: Here, you can relax, share jokes, and just have fun.
  • NationStates: This section is for talking about important game-related topics.

Creating Regions and Laws

Players can create and manage their own regions. These are like communities for groups of players. Each region has a Regional Message Board, which works like an online forum. The player who creates a region is called its founder.

Players in a region can also choose a World Assembly Delegate. This delegate represents their region in the World Assembly (WA).

The World Assembly

The World Assembly (WA) is an organization within the game. It's similar to the United Nations in the real world. The WA creates laws that apply to nations that join it. Nations do not have to be a member of the WA.

The World Assembly used to be called "The United Nations." But Max Barry received an email from the real United Nations. They asked him not to use their trademark name in his game.

Sharing Your Nation's Story

Players can also create "factbooks" and "dispatches" about their country. These are like special pages where you can tell other players all about your nation. It's a great way to share your nation's history, culture, and unique features.
