National Corndog Day facts for kids
National Corndog Day is a fun yearly celebration! It brings together three cool things: basketball, tasty corn dogs, and Tater Tots. It also includes American beer for adults. This special day happens every March. It's always on the first Saturday of the big NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship tournament.
The Story of National Corndog Day
National Corndog Day started in 1992. Two friends, Brady Sahnow and Henry Otley, created it. They lived in Corvallis, Oregon. The very first celebration was small and just for fun. It only included corndogs and basketball games.
Over the next few years, the celebration grew. People added tater tots and beer to the party. Soon, National Corndog Day spread to many other cities. Now, big companies help support the event. These include Foster Farms, a chicken company, and PBR, a beer company. Jones Soda also helps out.
A group of leaders helps manage National Corndog Day. These leaders are called "city captains." They organize parties in different cities across the United States.
By 2007, parties for National Corndog Day were held in 113 places. These locations were in over 30 U.S. states. They also included the District of Columbia and Australia. In 2008, even more people joined in. Nearly 5,000 parties happened on five different continents. One party even took place at McMurdo Station in Antarctica!
In 2009, the number of parties went back to normal. About 400 parties were held on March 21, 2009. That same year, a musician named Ben Brennan wrote a special theme song. He won a contest and performed the National Corndog Day song.
