The National Newark Building

A Tall Landmark

The National Newark Building is a very important part of the Newark, New Jersey skyline. It has been the tallest building in Newark for a long time, since 1931. Imagine how impressive it must have looked when it was first built! For many years, it was also the tallest building in the entire state of New Jersey.

This skyscraper is 35 stories tall. It reaches a height of about 466 feet (142 meters). You can find it right in the heart of Downtown Newark, at 744 Broad Street. It's just a short distance north of a busy area called Four Corners.

Designed with Style

A father and son team, John H. & Wilson C. Ely, designed this amazing building. They were famous architects who also designed other important buildings in Newark, like Newark City Hall. The outside of the National Newark Building is made mostly of light brown brick and limestone.

The very top of the building looks special. Its design was inspired by the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. This mausoleum was one of the Seven Wonders of the World from ancient times! Inside the building, on the mezzanine floors, you can see ten beautiful paintings called murals. These murals were created by J. Monroe Hewlett and Charles Gulbrandsen. They show how business and trade grew in Newark over time.

A Modern Makeover

The National Newark Building got a big update that cost $68 million. This renovation was finished in 2002. As part of this update, a new strong steel pole was added to the top. This pole rises about 113 feet (34 meters) above the roof. With this new pole, the total height of the building and the pole together is about 578 feet (176 meters).
