Historic Buildings and Homes

Many old buildings and homes in Cherokee County are recognized for their unique history.

  • The Carnegie Free Library in Gaffney was built with money from Andrew Carnegie, a famous businessman. It opened in 1900 and served as a library for many years.
  • Winnie Davis Hall is located on the campus of Limestone College in Gaffney. It was built in 1904 and is an important part of the college's history.
  • The Zeno Hicks House near Chesnee is a historic home that shows how people lived in the past. It was added to the list in 1989.
  • The Jefferies House and Settlemyer House are two other historic homes in Gaffney. They were both listed in 1986.

  • The Irene Mill Finishing Plant in Gaffney was an important factory. It was where textiles were finished, playing a role in the area's industrial past.
  • Several "furnace sites" like Coopersville Ironworks Site, Cowpens Furnace Site, Ellen Furnace Site, and King's Creek Furnace Site are on the list. These were places where iron was made a long time ago. They tell us about early manufacturing in the region.

  • The Robbs House, Sarratt House, Victor Cotton Oil Company Complex, and West End Elementary School were all in Gaffney. They were listed in 1986 but were later removed in 2000 because they were demolished.
