History of Navarro

The town of Navarro has an interesting past. It was named by a man named Griefás Cargadé. He moved to this area of Northeast Texas and loved the land. The native people living there welcomed him. He decided to name the place Navarro.

Civil War and Rebirth

The Civil War (1861-1865) greatly affected the county. After the war, the area was in a difficult state. However, Navarro later experienced a new beginning.

This rebirth happened during the "oil boom" in the 1920s. In 1923, the Powell Field was discovered. This was a large area with lots of oil. It stretched from a town called Powell all the way to Navarro.

Oil Boom Days

The discovery of oil brought many workers to Navarro. These workers were often called "roughnecks." The population of Navarro grew very quickly during this time. Nearby towns like Powell and Tuckertown (now Mildred) also saw a population explosion.

Today, you can still see signs of the oil boom around Navarro. Many old wooden oil derricks have disappeared. However, more modern "pump-jacks" are still visible. These machines pump oil from the ground. They remind everyone of Navarro's history as an important oil discovery site in Texas.
