Nedra Talley's Early Life and Family
Nedra Yvonne Talley was born in Manhattan, New York City, on January 27, 1946. She had a diverse background, with roots that included Black, Native American, Irish, and Puerto Rican heritage.
Nedra married Scott Ross, who was a DJ before becoming an interviewer for The 700 Club. They had four children together. Later in her life, Nedra worked in real estate and lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Nedra Talley's Music Journey
Nedra Talley and her cousin Estelle Bennett left The Ronettes in 1967. This was about ten years after the group first started. Nedra decided to leave because she became a born-again Christian after meeting her future husband, Scott Ross. She felt that her new faith meant she wanted to make Christian-inspired music, which was different from the Ronettes' style.
Exploring Christian Music
In 1977, Nedra recorded Christian songs written by Ted Sandquist, her church's music director. These songs were part of an album called The Courts of the King: The Worship Music of Ted Sandquist. A special single, "Love of My Lord" / "Redwood Tree," was also released. Famous guitarist Phil Keaggy played on some of the songs. This album was later released on CD for its 30th anniversary.
Solo Albums and Famous Connections
Nedra recorded another solo album in 1978 called Full Circle. This was a contemporary Christian music album, and Phil Keaggy again helped with the music. Keaggy even wrote the main song for the album. Nedra's husband, Scott Ross, produced Full Circle.
The album included a special photo from the 1960s. It showed Nedra and Estelle Bennett on a plane with The Beatles' John Lennon and George Harrison. The Beatles were big fans of The Ronettes, and The Ronettes even opened for them during their 1966 U.S. tour in America.
Collaborations and Legacy
Nedra also contributed her voice to Roger McGuinn's The Folk Den Project. This was a collection of folk songs released between 1995 and 2005.
Honored in Music History
In 2007, The Ronettes received a great honor. All the original members, including Nedra, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This recognized their important contributions to music history.
