History of Neiba
Before European explorers arrived, the area where Neiba is now was part of a native territory called a nitainato. This land belonged to the Chiefdom of Jaragua.
Neiba was first started as a town in 1546. It began as a place for raising cattle on the western side of the island. Years later, the town became empty, along with another town called Villa de San Juan.
Refounding and Battles
Neiba was settled again in 1735. At this time, people moved back and were able to use the lands that were part of the Azua district.
A big fight happened in Neiba on March 13, 1844. This was a battle between Haitian and Dominican soldiers. It is known as the Battle of the Baptism of Blood. This important event took place in what is now the municipality of Galván, in Bahoruco Province.
Neiba was also a key location during the struggles for the restoration of the Dominican Republic's independence. The first day of this war began with an attack on the Neiba command post. This action was led by a person named Cayetano Velásquez.
Becoming a Provincial Capital
In 1942, a law from the National Congress made Neiba the capital city of the Bahoruco Province. The city officially became the provincial capital on March 18, 1943. This happened when Rafael Trujillo was the country's president and leader. The people of Neiba celebrate this date on March 10 each year, because that's when the announcement was made.
Economy of Neiba
The most important crops grown in Neiba are coffee and grapes. Neiba was the first place to sell its coffee to new markets in Europe.
Grape and Coffee Production
For making grape products, a factory was built in Neiba. This factory makes wine, grape juice (must), alcohol, and jam. Experts from the governments of Italy and Spain helped with building this factory.
Grapes first came to the American continent on Christopher Columbus's second trip. They were introduced in Neiba. The first coffee plants were brought to Neiba in 1735 from Saint Domingue.
A new type of grape called "Red Globe" is now very popular. This happened after the "Grape Cluster" project was started in the area.
Besides coffee and grapes, farmers in Neiba also grow other crops. These include bananas, mangoes, beans, passion fruit, and pigeon peas. They also produce honey and okra.
Climate
Neiba has a hot semi-arid climate. This means it is generally hot and dry, but it does get some rain. This type of climate is known as BSh in the Köppen climate classification system.
