Neighborhood Nine, also called Peabody or Area 9, is a lively neighborhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. It's mostly a place where people live, with many homes and quiet streets.
A Look at the Past
Long ago, in the 1600s, a big part of what is now Neighborhood Nine was a huge forest. This area was also part of the Cambridge Common, a large open space. Later, in 1828, the Common became a park.
As Harvard College was built nearby, wealthy families started moving into this area. This was during the time when America was still a group of colonies. In the 1800s, many Irish immigrants also came to live here.
By the 1900s, most of the neighborhood was already built up with homes and buildings. An interesting change happened with the neighborhood's clay pits. These pits were first used as a city dump. But later, they were transformed into a beautiful green space called Danehy Park. Also, some apartments were built that offer homes for people with different income levels.
Where is Neighborhood Nine?
Neighborhood Nine is located in Cambridge. It has clear borders that help you know where it is. To the southwest, it's next to Concord Avenue. To the east, it borders Massachusetts Avenue.
To the north, an invisible line runs close to Porter Square and Alewife Brook Parkway. Inside the neighborhood, you'll find several streets. Garden Street is a long one that goes through the area. Other important streets include Sherman Street, Raymond Street, Linnaean Street, and Upland Road.

Neighborhood Nine is the most populated neighborhood in Cambridge. In 2023, about 12,937 people lived here. This number has grown over the years, from 11,126 people in 1990 and 11,794 in 2000.
The people living in Neighborhood Nine come from many different backgrounds. About 63% are white, 11% are black, and 13% are Asian. Another 12.1% are from mixed backgrounds or other groups.
