Nelsonville is a small, unincorporated community located in Upper Freehold Township in Monmouth County, New Jersey. An "unincorporated community" is a place that doesn't have its own separate local government, but is part of a larger township or county. Nelsonville sits along County Route 526, a road that connects the towns of Allentown and Imlaystown.

Discovering Nelsonville's Past

Nelsonville has an interesting history with a few different names! It was once known as Newell and also Imlaystown Station.

How Nelsonville Got Its Name

The area was first called Imlaystown Station because it was the closest spot to the town of Imlaystown along the old Pemberton and Hightstown Railroad. This railroad was important for moving goods and people.

In 1883, a post office was set up in the area and was named Newell. However, this post office closed down in 1923. A few years later, in 1887, the community got its current name, Nelsonville. It was named after Charles Nelson, who was the local postmaster at the time.

Early Businesses and Industries

Back in the day, Nelsonville was a busy little hub. Besides the post office, there were other important businesses. People could find a wagon shop, where wagons were built or repaired. There was also a cider mill, which would have been a place where apples were pressed to make cider. These businesses were very important for the local farmers and residents.

Nelsonville Today

Today, Nelsonville is a quiet community that still has strong ties to its agricultural roots.

Modern Industries and Homes

Around Nelsonville, you'll find several farms and some light industries. "Light industries" are businesses that make smaller, lighter products, often without heavy machinery or pollution. You'll also see many single-family homes, where people live and raise their families.

The Union Transportation Trail

One exciting development in Nelsonville is the Union Transportation Trail. This trail is being built along the path where the old Pemberton and Hightstown Railroad used to run. It's a great example of how old railway lines can be transformed into trails for walking, biking, and enjoying nature. This trail offers a wonderful way for residents and visitors to explore the beautiful New Jersey countryside.
