History of Imlaystown
Imlaystown was founded a long time ago, in 1690. It used to be the main center for social life, business, and government in Upper Freehold. The community has about 30 buildings from the mid-1800s. Many of these buildings were rebuilt in 1898 after a big fire destroyed much of the town.
The name "Imlaystown" comes from the Imlay family. They owned a lot of land in the area during the colonial period. A post office was opened here in 1832, but it closed in 2009.

The district includes 29 buildings that help tell its story. One important building is Salter's Mill, which is also listed on its own. There's also a two-story brick school building built in 1930. It has a classic Colonial Revival style.
Places to Visit in Imlaystown
Imlaystown has some interesting historical spots:
- Ye Olde Yellow Meeting House was built in 1737. The church group that built it started meeting in 1720.
- Salter's Mill is one of the most famous buildings. It sits on a 28-acre millpond. This pond was once used for an ice business, as well as powering the mill.
- The Happy Apple Inn is the only restaurant in the community. It was originally a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Trenton and the Jersey Shore in the mid-1800s. The building you see today was rebuilt after a fire in 1904. The Happy Apple Inn opened in 1972.
Preserving History
Since 1985, when Imlaystown was added to the state and national lists of historic places, some parts of the community have faced challenges. While some areas were improved in the 1990s, including the millpond in 1995, many buildings are now in need of repair.
Keeping Imlaystown's historic buildings from falling apart is very important. It helps keep the area's unique rural charm and open spaces.
