Meet Nenad Milosavljević
Growing Up in Niš
Nenad Milosavljević was born in Niš, a city in Serbia. His parents were Čedomir and Branislava. His older brother, Predrag, was born three years before him.
Nenad went to Ratko Vukićević Elementary School in Niš. When he was a child, he learned to play the accordion. He even played it in school competitions! Later, in high school, he learned to play the guitar. At the same time, he sang in two different choirs.
As a teenager, Nenad was very interested in the hippie movement. He started playing music in parks in Niš. He also performed on beaches and in parks along the Adriatic coast. He would play popular rock songs on his acoustic guitar and harmonica.
Starting His Music Journey
Nenad Milosavljević began writing his own music when he was a teenager. He often used words from famous poems for his songs. For example, he wrote "Čuj kako jauče vetar" ("Hear the Wind Howl") using a poem by Dobriša Cesarić.
His first public show was in September 1970, at a club in Niš. He performed alone, playing his guitar and harmonica. Soon after, he made his first recordings at Radio Niš Studio. This happened with help from Milan Marković, a member of the band Lutajuća Srca. Nenad later performed with Lutajuća Srca many times. He also continued to perform by himself.
In 1973, he played at a festival called Festival Omladina. The band Lutajuća Srca suggested he take their spot. This performance helped him get on many shows, including a radio show called Veče uz radio. In 1974, Lutajuća Srca performed Nenad's song "Ta ulica je meni znana" at the Belgrade Spring Festival.
In 1974, Nenad wrote music for a play by an amateur theater group. The director, Desimir Stanojević, had an idea. He wanted Nenad to form a band to play music during the show. So, Nenad teamed up with members of a band called Dva Lustera. The new band included Nenad (singing), Goran Ljubisavljević (guitar), Predrag Branković (bass guitar), Nenad Tančić (drums), and Bratislav Stamenković (keyboards). Nenad's brother, Predrag, sang backup. Their first practice was on January 4, 1976. They performed live for the first time on April 11, 1977, during a play. They also held a concert at the National Theatre in Niš. Other bands and a school choir joined them.
Leading the Band Galija
In 1977, the members of Dva Lustera decided to change their name. They chose the name Galija after a local restaurant where they often met. Nenad Milosavljević became the leader of Galija.
Galija released their first album, Prva plovidba, in 1979. Nenad's brother, Predrag Milosavljević, wrote the lyrics for this album. He officially joined the band for their second album, Druga plovidba, released in 1980.
The band's first few albums had a progressive rock sound. But in the mid-1980s, they started making more popular music. Galija became super famous in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They were one of the most loved bands on the Serbian rock scene.
Nenad Milosavljević wrote all the music for Galija's first three albums. These were Prva plovidba, Druga plovidba, and Ipak verujem u sebe (1982). Later, other band members also wrote music. But since the album Trinaest (1996), Nenad has been the only one writing the music for Galija.
Music on His Own
Nenad Milosavljević has made only a few solo recordings during his career. In 1998, he sang the song "Jeleni" ("To Jelena") on a special album. This album, called Terorizam ne! (Terrorism No!), was made to raise money for charity. Many other famous singers were also on it.
In 2013, Nenad performed his song "Ruža od baruta" ("Gunpowder Rose") at the Beosong festival. This festival chooses who will represent Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, he did not make it to the finals.
Creating Music for Plays
Nenad Milosavljević started writing music for theater plays when he was still a teenager. In the early 1970s, he wrote music for a play called The Festivities. He even appeared in the play as a troubadour, singing and playing his guitar. In 1972, he wrote music for the play Aska and the Wolf. This play was based on a story by Ivo Andrić and performed at the Niš Puppet Theatre.
Over the years, Nenad has written music for more than 100 theater plays! These plays were performed in many different theaters across Serbia and beyond.
