The Neomedieval Forts are a group of old fortifications found in the mountains near Ceuta, a Spanish city in North Africa. These forts are located right on the border with Morocco. They were built a long time ago to protect the city.

Why Were These Forts Built?

These forts were built in the middle of the 19th century. This was after a war between Spain and Morocco, called the War of Wad-Ras. After the war ended with the Treaty of Wad-Ras, Spain wanted to make sure its border was safe.

The main idea was to build a series of watchtowers. These towers would help prevent any future attacks from outside. They were like a strong fence to protect Ceuta.

Important Forts and Towers

Several important towers and a fort were built as part of this defense system. Some of the most well-known towers include:

  • Aranguren
  • Yebel Ányera
  • Renegado (this one has changed a lot over time)
  • Isabel II
  • Francisco de Asís
  • Piniés
  • Mendizábal

In addition to these towers, a larger structure called the Fort of Principe Alfonso was also part of this important defense line.
