The Torre de Piniés is an old fort located in the city of Ceuta, Spain. It was built in the 19th century to help protect the city's border. This special building is recognized as a "Bien de Interés Cultural," which means it is a very important historical monument.
Building the Torre de Piniés
The construction of the Torre de Piniés happened between 1862 and 1864. It was later updated in 1866 and got its final look in 1877. An engineer named Mendicuti designed this fort.
The fort was named after Antonio de Piniés y Lasierra. He was a Spanish nobleman and a military leader. He passed away during a conflict known as the War of Africa.
What Does Torre de Piniés Look Like?
The Torre de Piniés is a fort built in a style called "neo-medieval." This means it looks like castles and forts from the Middle Ages, but it was built much later. It was designed to hold about 40 soldiers.
The fort has a tall, round tower with two levels and a place for cannons. Inside, there's a central staircase. Around the base of the tower, there's a dry ditch, like a moat, but without water. The top of the fort has special openings called machicolations and battlements. These were used to defend the fort.
The Torre de Piniés was built using strong materials. These include concrete, lime, stone, solid bricks, and cut stone blocks.
