Francisco Borja Enrique Ayesa (born January 20, 1974), known as Neru, is a Spanish former footballer and coach. He mostly played as a central defender. Sometimes, he also played on the left side of the field.
Neru had a professional football career that lasted 17 years. During this time, he played in Spain's top league, La Liga, for seven seasons. He played a total of 127 games in La Liga. He spent six years with Racing de Santander and one year with Sporting de Gijón.
Neru's Football Journey
Neru was born in a town called Laredo, Cantabria. He grew up playing football in the youth system of Racing de Santander. This was his local team. He first joined the main team in the 1998–99 season. He was 24 years old at the time. Over the next few years, he played in different defensive roles for the team. This included a season when the team was in the second division.
In the 2004–05 season, Neru was loaned to Sporting de Gijón. This team was also in the Segunda División (second division). He was a very important player for them that season. On May 1, 2005, he scored a goal in a home game against Pontevedra CF. Sporting de Gijón won that game 3–2. After his loan, he went back to Racing de Santander. He played 15 more games in La Liga during the 2005–06 season.
In January 2007, Neru became a free agent, meaning he could join any team. He played for Cádiz CF, another second-division team, for six months. Then, in the summer of 2007, he rejoined Sporting de Gijón. He only played four matches during the 2007–08 season. That year, Sporting de Gijón returned to the top league after 10 years.
In August 2009, when he was 35, Neru joined Deportivo Alavés. This team was in division three. However, he had some disagreements with the team's management. Because of this, he left the team. In January 2010, he moved up a division to join SD Huesca. He played for them until the end of the season. He took the place of another player, Daniel Mustafá. For the next season, 2010–2011, he moved to Pontevedra CF. After this season, he retired from playing football.
Neru as a Coach
After retiring as a player, Neru started coaching. In the 2012–2013 season, he coached for Santoña CF. The next year, he became an assistant coach for SD Noja. He worked under head coach Claudio Arzeno. Later, he also coached for SD Gama and CD Bezana.
Neru's Life Outside Football
In 2011, Neru decided to try something different. He ran for a position in the local government of Laredo. He was part of the People's Party. However, he did not win the election.
