Assacumbuit (born around 1660, died 1727) was a brave Native American leader. He belonged to the Maliseet tribe, which is part of the larger Abenaki people. He became famous for his skills as a warrior and diplomat. In 1706, King Louis XIV of France even made him a knight! His name is spelled in many ways, like Escumbuit or Nescambiouit.

Assacumbuit and King William's War

Assacumbuit first joined forces with the French during a conflict called King William's War. This war happened in the late 1600s. In 1696-1697, he helped the French leader Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville. They attacked Fort St. John during a campaign in the Avalon Peninsula.

Even after the war officially ended, some Abenaki groups continued to raid English settlements. On March 4, 1698, Chief Escumbuit led about 30 Native Americans in an attack on Andover, Massachusetts. This was the last and most serious Native American attack on that town.

Assacumbuit and Queen Anne's War

Assacumbuit also took part in Queen Anne's War. This war happened in the early 1700s. In 1703, he was involved in the Northeast Coast Campaign.

In early 1705, he was in Newfoundland again. There, he helped in the Siege of St. John's. He also participated in other French and Native American attacks against English areas. Later that year, France invited him to visit. They wanted to form a strong alliance with his tribe. He returned to America in 1706. In 1708, he fought in the Raid on Haverhill.

His Reputation Among English Colonists

Assacumbuit had a very strong reputation among the English colonists in New England. They were quite afraid of him. They called him a "bloody devil." They also accused him of causing harm to many women and children during the conflicts.
