History of Neunkirchen District
How the District Was Formed
In 1974, the districts in the state of Saarland were reorganized. This means they changed the borders and names of some areas. During this big change, the city of Neunkirchen became the main capital of the district. The district's name was also changed to Neunkirchen at this time.
Earlier Attempts to Become Capital
The city of Neunkirchen had actually tried to become the district capital much earlier, back in 1866. Even after the 1974 changes, some parts of the district's administration still remained in the nearby town of Ottweiler.
Understanding the Coat of Arms
Symbols on the Neunkirchen Coat of Arms
The coat of arms is like a special symbol or emblem for the Neunkirchen district. It tells a story about its past.
The top part of the coat of arms shows a lion. This lion represents the Duchy of Nassau, a powerful family that used to rule this area a long time ago. Specifically, it was ruled by a branch of this family called Nassau-Saarbrücken, which later became Nassau-Ottweiler.
The bottom part of the coat of arms shows two important symbols. One is a rose, which stands for the town of Ottweiler. The other is a wheel, which represents the city of Neunkirchen. These symbols show the two biggest and most important cities within the district.
