Neus Bouza Gil (born in 1916, died in 1939) was a young woman from Catalonia, a region in Spain. She was part of a group called anarchists and joined a special women's army group during the Spanish Civil War. She was only 22 years old when she died. Neus was one of twelve women who were sadly shot in a place called Camp de la Bota by the government at that time, led by Franco.
Who Was Neus Bouza Gil?
Neus Bouza Gil was born in Barcelona in 1916. She grew up in a neighborhood called El Poblenou. In 1936, when the Spanish Civil War began, Neus decided to help. She joined a group of fighters called the confederal militias. Her job was to help with things like laundry and cooking at an old army school.
Soon after, the government decided that women should not be fighting on the front lines. So, Neus went back to her old job at a canvas factory. On October 10, 1936, she also joined a workers' union called the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT).
When the war ended, the side Neus supported lost. A new government, led by General Franco, took over Spain. This new government was very strict with anyone who had been against them.
On February 23, 1939, someone reported Neus to the authorities. She was arrested by a group called the Falangists. She was then taken to prison on March 8.
On April 26, Neus had a very quick trial. She was accused of being involved in or seeing the killing of people who supported the other side. Neus said she did not do these things. However, she was found guilty and sentenced to death. On May 26, 1939, Neus was shot in the Camp de la Bota, along with 22 men.
Remembering Neus Bouza Gil
Years later, people wanted to remember Neus Bouza Gil and other women like her. In 2013, during a local festival, the town of Sant Adrià de Besòs opened a special meeting room in their library. They named it the Nues Bouza assembly hall.
This was part of a bigger project called "Streets with a Woman's Name." The goal of this project is to show how important women have been in history. It also helps to remember all the women who were shot in the Camp de la Bota.
