At the museum, you can ride historic trains! They have both 4 ft 8 12 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge (standard) and 3 ft (914 mm) (narrow) gauge trains. You can also try handcar rides, which are super fun. The museum also hosts talks, special events, and an annual meeting about railroad history. They even have changing exhibits.

The museum also works to research and fix up old trains. One special exhibit celebrates 150 years since the First transcontinental railroad was finished. It features V&T Coach No. 17. This coach once carried Leland Stanford to the important Golden spike ceremony in Utah.

The Wabuska Depot, an old train station from Wabuska, Nevada, was moved to the museum. This building is still used today! It's where you buy tickets for the museum's train rides.

Cool Trains to See

The Nevada State Railroad Museum has a large collection of historic trains. These include different types of steam locomotives, motor locomotives, and even special motorcars. Many of these trains have interesting stories and were used for different jobs.

Steam Locomotives

The museum has several amazing steam locomotives. These are the classic trains that run on steam power.

  • Virginia & Truckee #18 "Dayton": This train was built in 1873. It's a 4-4-0 "American" type locomotive. It was used by the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.
  • Virginia & Truckee #22 "Inyo": Another 4-4-0 "American" type, built in 1875. This one is still operational, meaning it can run!
  • Virginia & Truckee #25: This is a bigger 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" type, built in 1905. It's also operational and you might see it running at the museum.
  • Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming #1 "Glenbrook": This is a narrow gauge train, built in 1875. It's a 2-6-0 "Mogul" type and is operational.

Motorcars

The museum also has unique motorcars. These are like early versions of self-powered rail vehicles, often used for passengers or inspections.

  • Virginia & Truckee #22: This is a McKeen Motor Car from 1910. It's a very cool and unique looking vehicle, and it's operational!
