Nevado (born around 1813 – died 1821) was a special Mucuchies dog. He was given to Simón Bolívar by people in Mucuchíes, a town in the Venezuelan Andes mountains. This gift happened in 1813, after a battle called Niquitao. It was during Bolívar's famous journey, the Admirable Campaign, from what is now Colombia to Caracas.
A Brave Friend
When Bolívar's army was near a farm, a huge, barking guard dog stopped them. The soldiers were ready to fight the dog. But Bolívar saw how beautiful and brave the dog was. He told his soldiers to stop. This brave dog was Nevado.
Nevado became Bolívar's loyal companion. He always ran next to Bolívar's horse. It didn't matter if they were in busy cities or on dangerous battlefields. Nevado was always there, showing great loyalty.
Nevado's Final Battle
Nevado stayed with Bolívar through many adventures. Sadly, Nevado died during the Battle of Carabobo on June 24, 1821. This was a very important battle for Venezuela's freedom.
When Bolívar heard that Nevado was badly hurt, he rushed to his dog. But he arrived too late. Nevado had passed away.
Remembering Nevado
Today, you can find several statues and monuments dedicated to Nevado. These monuments are at the entrance of Mucuchíes town. They help people remember this brave and loyal dog. He was a true companion to Simón Bolívar, a hero of South American independence.
