History of Neville Island
Early Days and Name Change
Long ago, this island was known as Montour's Island. It was named after Andrew Montour, a Native American who helped translate languages. He lived on the island during colonial times.
Before the American Revolution, both Pennsylvania and Virginia claimed the island. They both gave parts of the island to their citizens. This disagreement went all the way to the Supreme Court in 1799. A man named Charles Simms won the case. He then gave the island to his partner, General John Neville. The island and the township are now named after him. General Neville spent his last years living on the island.
Becoming a Township
Neville Township officially became a township on April 8, 1854. It was created from a part of Ohio Township. In 1901, it became a "first-class" township. This means it met certain requirements for its population and services.
Around 1903, some people thought Neville Island would become a very important place. A newspaper ad even called it "the next Manhattan Island."
Island Sports Center
In 1998, a company called Hillman built the Island Sports Center on the western part of Neville Island. Later, in 2003, Robert Morris University bought the sports center.
The Island Sports Center is a great place for sports. It has a hockey rink with 1,200 seats. There is also a golf range and a fun miniature golf course. You can find athletic fields and a pro shop there too.
