History of Neville Island
This island was once known as Montour's Island. It was named after Andrew Montour, a Native American interpreter. He lived on the land many years ago. Before the American Revolution, both Pennsylvania and Virginia claimed the island. This led to a big legal case called Irvine v. Sims's Lessee in 1799.
A man named Charles Simms won the case. He then gave the island to his partner, General John Neville. That's how the island and the township got their current name. General Neville lived on the island during his last years.
Neville Township officially became a township on April 8, 1854. It was formed from a part of Ohio Township. In 1901, it became a "first-class" township, which means it had a more organized local government. Back in 1903, a newspaper ad even called the island "the next Manhattan Island"!
Sports and Fun on the Island
In 1998, a company built the Island Sports Center on the western tip of Neville Island. Robert Morris University bought the center in 2003. It's a great place for sports!
The Island Sports Center has:
- A large hockey rink with 1,200 seats
- A golf driving range
- A fun miniature golf course
- Different athletic fields
- A pro shop for sports gear
