Allium douglasii var. nevii (S. Wats.) Ownbey & Mingrone

Allium nevii, also known as Nevius' onion or Nevius' garlic, is a special kind of plant. It grows naturally in parts of Washington State and Oregon in the United States. You can often find it in wet, grassy areas like meadows or along the edges of streams. It likes to grow in places that are quite high up, sometimes as tall as 2000 meters (about 6,500 feet) above sea level!

What Does Nevius' Onion Look Like?

Nevius' onion starts with a small, egg-shaped bulb that can be up to 2 centimeters (about 0.8 inches) wide.

Stems and Flowers

Each plant usually has one to three scapes. A scape is like a long, smooth stem that grows from the ground and holds the flowers. These scapes can be round or a little flat, and they grow up to 25 centimeters (about 10 inches) tall.

The flowers of Nevius' onion grow in a cluster called an umbel. An umbel looks a bit like an umbrella, with many flower stems coming from one point. Each umbel can have as many as 30 bell-shaped flowers. Each flower is about 7 millimeters (about 0.3 inches) wide.

Colors of the Plant

The petals of the flowers, which are called tepals, are a pretty rose color. Inside the flowers, the parts that hold pollen are called anthers. Both the anthers and the pollen itself are a cool blue color.
