New Canton is a small community in New Jersey. It's not a separate town, but an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of larger townships. New Canton is special because it sits right on the border of two different areas: Robbinsville Township in Mercer County and Upper Freehold Township in Monmouth County.
What is New Canton?
New Canton is a community where people live and work. It's located where two important roads meet: Old York Road (also known as County Route 539) and New Canton-Stone Tavern Road (CR 524). This intersection is just north of Interstate 195's exit 8.
A Bit of History
Long ago, this area had a different name. It was once known as Cabbagetown. People have lived here for a very long time, since the 18th century. That's over 200 years ago!
What's There Today?
The community of New Canton looks a bit different depending on which side you are on.
- On the Upper Freehold Township side, you can see lots of farmland. There are also new houses being built.
- On the Robbinsville Township side, you'll find newer commercial buildings. These are often large warehouses. For example, a big Amazon.com Fulfillment Center opened here in July 2014. This center helps store and ship products that people order online.
